Colors

Salaam!

In Arabic, colors are called as الألوان al-alwaan. How do we spell it? aleph, laam, aleph, hamza, lam, waaw, aleph, nuun. The word al-alwaan is a plural noun.

Colors that we have are

abyadh أبيض : white
akhdhar أخضر : green
as-far أصفر : yellow
adz-raq أزرق : blue
ah-mar أحمر : red
as-mar أسمر : brown
ad-kan أدكن : dark
as-wad أسود : black
ramadiy رمادى : gray
banaf-sajiy بنفسجى : purple

The colors are adjectives. It is because it explains the color of certain things. In Arabic, colors must be after a noun. And there is also colors with feminine gender for feminine noun. Just like in Spanish. Those colors given above are colors in masculine form. Here are colors in feminine form.

baidhaa' بيضاء : white
khadh-raa' خضراء : green
saf-raa' صفراء : yellow
dzur-qaa' ذرقاء : blue
ham-raa' حمراء : red
sam-raa' سمراء : brown
duk-naa' دكناء : dark
saudaa' سوداء : black
ramadiyya رمادية : gray
banaf-sajiyya بنفسجية : purple

I think it is a lil' too early for adjectives to be put here. But it is ok. We can refer back to this after we learn about other things like nouns and verbs.
